Day 1: Day of approach to the refuge
We leave from the Pont Parking in the Valsavarenche Valley and through a beautiful cobbled path we will ascend gently until we leave behind the lush forest and give way to the alpine meadows. Enraptured by the views and almost without realizing it, the glaciers of the high mountain will appear before us and we will reach our destination, the genuine refuge of Federico Chabot at an altitude of 2,77 meters.
Starting point: Pont (Aosta Valley, 1.960m) Technical difficulty: none.
Time: 2-3 h
Elevation gain: 700m approx.
Day 2: Gran Paradiso summit (4.061m)
We leave around 4:30 a.m. from the refuge to gain meters little by little under the light of our headlamps. Normally we will arrive at the glacier shortly after dawn and it is here where we will rope up and equip ourselves to begin the glacier ascent. From here and through successive snow and ice slopes we will reach the rimaya that we have to cross very close to the summit where we will only have to cross the aerial summit ridge to the famous Madonna that presides over the summit of this emblematic and narrow peak of the Aosta Valley. Technical difficulty: F+ (icy slopes up to 40o and summit ridge in mixed terrain III).
Time: long day of between 10 and 12 hours to the valley.
Elevation gain: 1.350m positive/ 2.050m descent to the car.
(Optional) 3rd Day: For those who doubt their strength, there is the possibility of adding a day as we have the option of staying in the refuge to split the descent into two days and make it more bearable.
